The year 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the commencement of Sumitomo Chemical’s operations.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone for their generous support.

Sumitomo Chemical has its origins in the Sumitomo Fertilizer Manufactory, which was founded to resolve the air pollution problems created by Sumitomo’s copper smelting operation at the Besshi Copper Mine (in present-day Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan) by removing the sulfur from the copper ore, which was the cause of the pollution, and using it to manufacture fertilizer.

Founded in order to resolve environmental problems while contributing to the improvement of agriculture, Sumitomo Chemical has placed a priority, above all else, on proving itself worthy of society’s trust and maintaining harmony between the individual, the nation and society, or, in other words, ensuring that our business not only benefits our own interests but also society at large. These are both tenets of the Sumitomo Spirit, and they have been passed down in an unbroken chain since Sumitomo Chemical’s inception. Under this dignified banner, Sumitomo Chemical has responded to the changing needs of each era, developed a diversified portfolio of businesses, and consistently generated technological innovations, thereby helping people to build better lives.

By proactively using the power of chemistry to improve people’s lives and find solutions to the problems facing the world of food, the environment, resources and energy, Sumitomo Chemical will continue to grow for the next hundred years as a global, diversified chemical company trusted by society.

We ask you all for your continued cooperation and support.
