Participation in various aluminum smelting projects, including P.T. Indonesia Asahan Aluminium in 1982, and those in New Zealand, Australia and Brazil.

Started MMA monomer production at our joint venture with LG MMA Corp. of Korea and Nippon Shokubai of Japan in February 1993. These ventures now also produce polymers.

Started procedures towards the production of acrylic acid, acrylic acid ester, super water absorption resin, MMA monomer and meta-acrylic resin production in Singapore in July 1996. Production of these products began in late 1998 / early 1999. In March 2008, we started operation of our Phase III plant for MMA monomer and our Phase II plant for MMA polymer.

As a base for manufacture and sales of MMA sheet, established Sumipex (Thailand) Co. Ltd. in Thailand in 2002 and Sumipex TechSheet Co., Ltd. in Taiwan in 2008.

Initial operations at the Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore started in March 1984. A second phase of production to increase capacity started in the spring of 1997 in order to meet increased demands for olefins in East Asia. PCS's new ethylene capacity is about 1100 thousand tons, and TPC’s (The Polyolefin Company) polyethylene capacity and polypropylene capacity are 400 thousand tons and 350 thousand tons respectively.

Phillips Sumika polypropylene Co (PSPC), which took over Phillips Petroleum's relevant businesses, commenced full-fledged sales in August 1994. This company’s new plant, which follows Sumitomo’s production processes, started production in November 1996. The Company opened a Detroit Office in September 1998 to promote the use of its products by automobile manufacturers.

The sectors have expanded operations at Sumitomo Chemical America Inc.'s New York office and its Edison office to include the sale of fine chemical intermediates, pharmacenticals and IT-related materials. In 2003, the IT-related Chemicals Sector established Sumika Electronic Materials, Inc., a subsidiary of Sumika EPI Solution Co., Ltd., in Phoenix to manufacture and sell MOEPI wafers and other IT-related materials.

The sectors established Sumitomo Chemical Belgium S.A./N.V. in July 1994 to sell dyestuffs, resorcinol, photoresist, super engineering plastics, and feed additives, as well as to provide technical services. In September 2006, we established Sumika Electronic Materials Poland SP.ZO.O. for the processing of polarizing film and the manufacture of light diffusion plates.

The IT-related Chemicals Sector has started production of high purity chemicals and photoresist at Dongwoo Fine-chem of Korea. This company is now one of our business bases in East Asia. Its operations have been expanded to include the sale of functional chemicals and other fine chemicals. In its Pyungtaek Works, two large-scale production facilities of key materials for liquid crystal displays commenced operations in 2003. One is for color filters run by Dongwoo STI Co., Ltd. and the other is for optical functional films by Dongwoo Optical Films Co., Ltd. Constructions of the second plants for each of the two materials are currently in progress.
Bara Chemical, established in Thailand in 1973, has expanded its operation to the manufacture and sale of bonding agents, super engineering plastics and other fine chemicals. The Company also sells finishing resin and dyes, as well as provides technical services to customers.
The IT-related Chemicals Sector established SC-IK Technology Co., Ltd. in Taiwan in 2001. It manufactures optical functional films in its Tainan Works. It has started construction of the second facility in the Tainan Works to meet the growing demand.
In China, Sumika Electronic Materials (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. manufactures high purity gallium and processes optical functional films.

In April 1988, the Company established Valent U.S.A. to promote its crop protection business in the United States. It further set up Valent de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. in April 1994 and opened a Chicago office in May 1996 to develop and sell household insecticides. The Company acquired the bio pesticide business of Abbott Laboratories in January 2000 and formed Valent Biobusiness Corp. Sumitomo Chemical is engaged in the research & development, manufacture and sale of biological agrochemicals and have a significant share of the worldwide market. In 2007, we acquired stock in Pace Inernational in order to further strengthen this business.

To further its crop protection business, the Company acquired KenoGard S.A. of Spain in June 1992. Philagro France S.A. started development and sales of agricultural chemicals in France in October 1993. The Company acquired a 50% stake of Isagro Italia in May 2002. In June 2007, Sumitomo Chemical Agro Europe S.A.S. acquired a majoritystake in the UK crop protection distributor Interfarm, and the same year established an office in Hungary to strengthen sales in Central Europe. In order to increase the global household insecticides business, the Company in May 2001 acquired the relevant businesses of Appendix Crop Science of France.

In December 1994, Sumitomo Chemical Taiwan was established. In August 1995, the Company opened its Beijing Representative office. In October 1996, the operational head quarters for the Company's household insecticide business was established in Malaysia, and the site was equipped with technical service laboratories. In December 1997, Sumitomo Chemical Shanghai Co., Ltd. started operations. In March 1988, Sumitomo Chemical Australia Pty Ltd was established. In March 1999, Philagro South Africa was (Pty) Ltd. was founded in Pretoria, South Africa, to develop and sell agricultural chemicals, as well as household insecticides. In April 2000, Sumitomo Chemical India Private Limited was established in Mumbai, India as a sales base for agricultural chemicals and household insecticides. In May 2000, the Company acquired 90% of an Indian company that manufactured agricultural chemical intermediates and created SC Enviro Agro India, which manufactures household insecticides and agricultural chemicals. In April 2003, Dalian Sumika Chemicals was formed in Dalian, China to manufacture intermediates of agricultural chemicals.
