Insecticides
Insecticides
We have developed many agricultural insecticides based on our own proprietary technologies. For example, Sumithion, an organophosphorus insecticide, has been widely used for more than 30 years for various agricultural applications around the world. Because of its high efficacy and low toxicity, Sumithion has been recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for locust control. Besides agricultural usage, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended Sumithion for malaria control as well. Sumicidin, a pyrethroid insecticide, is used worldwide for cotton, fruit and vegetable cultivation. In addition, Sumi-Alpha, an effective isomer of Sumicidin, is sold in many countries. In Japan, Sumicidin is used in combination with various organophosphorus insecticides and sold under such brand names as Parmathion, Hakusap, Vegiphon, and Mikantop. Danitol (Rody, Meothrin) is another major pyrethroid insecticide. Danitol has acaricidal as well as insecticidal activities, and is used for cotton, fruit, tea and vegetable growing in many parts of the world. Other major Sumitomo pyrethroids include Adion and Agrothrin.
Admiral is an insect growth regulator developed by synthesizing a compound whose molecular structure is similar to that of the natural juvenile hormones found in insects. It is effective against target insect pests such as scales, whiteflies, and thrips. We are also marketing a biological insecticide called Dipol in Japan.

Herbicides
We market the Sumiherb and Cremart brands of herbicide products in Japan. Sumiherb is widely used in rice paddies in combination with other herbicides. Cremart is used for rice and other crops, such as vegetables and lawns. In overseas markets, we market various other types of herbicides, including Resource (Sumiverde) for soybeans and corn, and Select* and Sumisoya for soybeans.
* Select is a trademark of Tomen Corporation.

Fungicides
Sumilex (Sumisclex) and Powmyl are fungicides widely used for fruit and vegetables. Renowned for their efficacy in protecting grapes from graymold diseases, they are used in vineyards and vegetable farms in Japan, France and many other countries. Rizolex, an organophosphorus fungicide, is highly effective against soil-borne diseases like Rhizoctonia. It is used in Japan and overseas for potatoes, vegetables, flowers and lawns. Starner is a bactericide for the control of bacterial grain rot, and is sold mainly in the Japanese market. Sumi-8 is another fungicide that is sold in overseas markets for cereal seed treatment.

Plant growth regulators
Sumitomo Chemical has also developed proprietary products in the area of plant growth regulators, Examples include Sumiseven, a plant growth regulator for flower stalks, and Lomica, an anti-lodging agent for paddy rice.

FERTILIZERS
FERTILIZERS
Sumitomo Chemical traces its origins back to its fertilizer manufacturing operations, which began in 1913. Starting with superphosphate, we have added ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, urea, liquid fertilizers, and various compound fertilizers including nitrate compounds and slow-release compounds to our product line. Sumika-Ace compound fertilizer has been highly praised for its superior efficacy, particularly for upland crops. Sumishort is renowned as the world's first compound fertilizer containing a plant growth regulator for paddy rice.

HOUSEHOLD & PUBLIC HYGIENE CHEMICALS
Household insecticides
Household insecticides
Sumitomo Chemical was the first company to succeed in synthesizing on a commercial scale compounds that are equivalent in insecticidal efficacy and similar in molecular structure to natural pyrethrins. In 1953, we launched Pynamin, a pyrethroid insecticide containing one such compound. We have subsequently developed a series of pyrethroid insecticides, such as Neo-Pynamin, Pynamin Forte, Chrysron Forte, Pynamin-D Forte, and Etoc. Today, Sumitomo's pyrethroid insecticides are used worldwide for such household insecticide products as mosquito coils and mats and aerosol sprays. Pyrethroid insecticides Eksmin and Gokilaht and oxadiazole insecticide Elemic are used for the control of cockroaches. Vaporthrin, another pyrethroid insecticide, is used to prevent moths from damaging clothes.
These household insecticides are supplied to customers in more than 110 countries throughout Asia, Europe, North America, and many other parts of the world.

Public hygiene insecticides
Sumitomo Chemical offers a variety of products that contribute to improved public hygiene worldwide. For example, Premium Sumithion and Sumithrin are widely used in public hygiene applications, such as pest control in towns and villages and the control of flies and mosquitoes in garbage dumps. We are also marketing Sumilarv, an insect growth regulator.

Other products
Sumitomo Chemical supplies insecticides against termites, including Kareit MC and Baktop MC, microencapsulated insecticides, and Kareit Oil and Zaol FL, which are pyrethroid insecticides.

Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)
Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) Olyset® Net Sumitomo Chemical is engaged in the sale of Olyset® Net, an insecticidal mosquito net effective in the prevention of malaria. In addition to being highly durable and providing excellent ventilation, Olyset® Net maintains its efficacy for over 5 years because the insecticide embedded in the netting fibers seeps to the surface gradually. Sumitomo Chemical began research on embedding insecticide into synthetic resins in 1982, and development of Olyset® Net was completed in 1994. In 2001, the WHO endorsed Olyset® Net as a Long Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN), and at present the nets are being sold in many countries around the world, with a particular focus on Africa.

Oita Works
Ohita Works
In 1939, the Oita Works became operational as an intermediates production base of Japan Dyestuffs Manufacturing Co. for dyes, agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Following its merger with Sumitomo Chemical, it became one of the world largest cresol complexes producing Sumithion, a pesticide, and Sumilizer, an anti-oxidant.
Oita is now a specialty chemicals factory producing Sumicidin, an pesticidal pyrethroid, as well as specialty pesticides and active ingredients for pharnaceutieals.
In 1987, the former pharmaceutical bulk plant in Torishima, Osaka, was integrated into the Works and it now serves Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals as a bulk supplier of Meropen, a carbapenem antibiotic and Amulodin, an anti-hypertensive of the calcium channel blocker type. A new pharmaceutical bulk plant was built in 2003 in conformity with current GMP. A part of the drug formulation facilities of Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals’ Ibaraki Plant will be transferred to Oita to make the Works our manufacturing base for pharmaceuticals.
