IT-related Chemicals Sector
The IT-related Chemicals Sector comprises the following four divisions:
Optical Materials Division (e.g., optically functional films for liquid crystal displays, color filters), Semiconductor Process Materials Division (e.g., high-purity chemicals for the electronics industry, photoresists for IC manufacturing), Electronic Materials Division (e.g., super-engineering plastics for key electronic components), and Battery Materials Division (lithium ion secondary battery separator).

OPTICAL MATERIALS
Sumikalan polarizing film
Polarizing film Sumikalan
Polarizing film
Sumikalan is a high-performance polarizing film that is a key component of liquid crystal displays (LCDs). We have developed Sumikalan by utilizing our proprietary stretching technology, which provides excellent orientation to polymers. The product line is expanding to meet customers' diverse needs, and includes dyed grades using our proprietary high dichromatic dyes for outdoor applications and anti-reflection grades.

Sumikalight retardation film
Sumitomo Chemical's Sumikalight retardation film is used for LCDs to turn the obscure blue-and-yellow contrast of STN-type LCDs into a sharp black-and-white contrast. Since the launch of color STN-type LCDs, Sumikalight has gained broad market acceptance because its homogeneous optical properties enable the distinct black-and-white contrast needed as the base for color display. We have further developed special grades of Sumikalight that widen the viewing angle of STN-type and TFT-type LCDs. These products, which are based on our proprietary technologies, help control the refractive index of the film in three-dimensional directions.

Color filters
Color filters are the components in a liquid crystal display (LCD) that translate light into color images. Of the many manufacturing methods available, Sumitomo Chemical uses a pigment dispersion method that is superior for, among other qualities, its optimal productivity and superior color characteristics. In the rapidly developing field of advanced LCD technology, the company has developed various types of color filters that answer to a wide variety of needs, such as the VA (Vertical Alignment) type and the IPS (In Plate Switching) type, which allow wide viewing angles, in addition to TN (Twist Nematic) type color filters. These materials serve such a diverse range of applications as displays for notebook PCs, monitors, small- and medium-size mobile phones, digital still cameras, and portable DVD players.
By supplementing its accumulated technological capabilities and quality assurance system with new production technologies and innovative performance-boosting elemental technologies developed in tandem with environmental management systems, Sumitomo Chemical will continue to leverage its strengths to supply its customers with high-performance, high-quality color filters.

SEMICONDUCTOR PROCESS MATERIALS
Sumiresist positive-type photoresists
Sumiresist positive-type photoresists
Drawing on the broad expertise we have accumulated over many years as a diversified chemical company, we have developed Sumiresist positive-type photoresists. Along with the advancement of microchip technology, the critical resolution of photoresists is being controlled with increased precision, from half a micron down to a quarter micron or below. In anticipation of ever growing and diversifying customer needs, we are redoubling our development efforts for more advanced i-line photoresists as well as for a newer generation of photoresists, including those for excimer laser lithography.

Sputtering targets
Sputtering targets
We use our proprietary crystal control technology to manufacture aluminum alloy targets and titanium targets of superior quality and reliability. The targets are then supplied to our customers worldwide as raw materials for electrodes and electric wiring for integrated circuits.

Supral super-high-purity aluminum
Our Supral aluminum boasts an ultra-high purity level of 99.999% or higher. It is used as wiring material for integrated circuits or as conductive material to stabilize electric transmissions under super-conductivity.

ELECTRONIC MATERIALS
Sumikasuper liquid crystal polymer
Sumikasuper liquid crystal polymer
Sumikasuper liquid crystal polymer, a super engineering
plastic developed by Sumitomo Chemical, has outstanding thin-wall fluidity, a maximum soldering temperature of 350°C, and long-term heat resistance at temperatures of 220 to 260°C. Demand for Sumikasuper has seen steady growth for such applications as coil bobbins, relays, switches and volumes.

Sumikaexcel polyether sulfone
Polymer emulsions
We started the production of Sumikaexcel polyether sulfone (PES) at our Ehime Works in 1994 under a license from Imperial Chemical Industries plc. PES is known for its well-balanced physical properties, such as superb water resistance, dimensional stability, and long-term heat resistance at temperatures of 180 to 200°C. This product will be used increasingly in various electronic components, automotive parts, medical equipment, and aerospace assemblies.

Sumiploy composite molding materials
Sumiploy composite molding materials are made of various high-performance polymers developed by Sumitomo Chemical. Characterized by excellent heat and abrasion resistance and superior mechanical strength, Sumiploy is used extensively in parts and assemblies for data-processing equipment, automobile engines and industrial robots.
