Inorganic
and organic industrial chemicals |
| Sumitomo
Chemical provides various industries with basic inorganic
industrial chemicals, including ammonia, nitric acid,
ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, caustic soda, chlorine
and hydrochloric acid. Our organic industrial chemicals
include aniline, methanol and formalin. These are widely
used to produce such products as polyurethane, rubber
products, dyestuffs, pigments and pharmaceuticals. We
also produce acrylic acid, used for acrylic ester and
water absorption polymers for paper diapers; acrylonitrile
for acrylic fiber; caprolactam for nylon fiber; phenylethyl
alcohol and coumarin for perfume; and epichlorohydrin
for epoxy resins. |

Alumina products |
| |
Sumitomo
Chemical supplies aluminum sulfate and polyaluminum
chloride used for waste water treatment and water
purification; aluminum hydroxide, used as a raw
material for aluminum sulfate and polyaluminum chloride;
and alumina, used for refractories and fine ceramics.
We also manufacture "five-nine" grade
alumina with the world's highest purity level of
99.999% as well as low-soda-content alumina for
IC packaging. We are promoting further development
for new applications for this ceramic material. |

LuxelenfFine-flake
titanium oxide
|
| Sumitomo
Chemical's Luxelen, fine white flakes of titanium oxide
produced by an ultra-thin layer formation technology,
is used as a basic ingredient in a new type of cosmetic
foundation that blocks a substantial amount of ultraviolet
radiation harmful to the skin. Luxelen-based foundations
are highly favored by consumers for their excellent sunburn
protection. |

Altex alumina fiber |
| |
Altex is a
continuous polycrystalline alumina fiber based on
Sumitomo Chemical's proprietary technology. Altex
boasts superior heat resistance and thermal insulation
properties at cryogenic temperatures as well as high
strength and elasticity. Altex is used for various
industrial and other applications, including sporting
goods. Applications under development include airplane
engine components and equipment housing superconductivity
devices. |

METHYL METHACRYLATE
PRODUCTS |
 |
|
 |
| |
Compared
with various other transparent plastics, polymethyl
methacrylate has excellent transparency, weatherability
and mechanical properties as well as beautiful luster.
Sumitomo Chemical's polymethyl methacrylate cast
sheeting, called Sumipex, extruded sheeting, called
Sumipex E, and Sumipex molding powder have broad
applications, including automobile components, home
electric appliances, illuminations and advertising
displays. Sumipex GT/HT, a high-impact resistance-grade
plastic, is a distinctive material that allows for
shearing, punching and nailing. |

Lumisty
– visible range control film |
| Sumitomo
Chemical's optically functional film, Lumisty, becomes
transparent or translucent depending on the angle of observation.
Specifically, Lumisty controls the transmission of light
on the basis of the incident angle. We are developing
Lumisty for various applications, such as panels to protect
privacy and advertising displays that provide unique visual
effects. |

High-purity aluminum |
| |
High-purity
aluminum is used in several applications including
aluminum foil for electrolytic capacitors and computer
hard disks. With the growth of the electronics industry,
demand for high-purity aluminum is increasing as a
target material for integrated circuits. Sumitomo
Chemical was the first company to develop aluminum
ingots with a purity level of 99.99% or higher. With
a world-class production capacity, Sumitomo Chemical
manufactures and supplies high-purity aluminum to
meet the growing demand. |

Plants and Laboratories |

Built
in 1913, the Ehime Works is the very origin
of Sumitomo Chemical’s manufacturing operations.
At this plant, sulfuric acid and calcium superphosphate
were produced from sodium dioxide gas generated
during the refining process of copper ores excavated
from the Besshi Copper Mine. Starting off with
the production of fertilizers, the plant expanded
its operations into related basic industrial
chemicals and in 1958 entered the petrochemical
field by commissioning the first low density
polyethylene plant in Japan.
The facility was expanded with a focus on petrochemicals
until 1983, when a decision was made to reorganize
the Company’s petrochemical operations
by integrating them into our Chiba Works near
Tokyo and closing down relatively small-scale
facilities such as the ethylene units.
Currently, Ehime Works is the main production
base for the Basic Chemicals Sector. In addition
to providing a stable supply of high-quality
products, it supports the company in opending
up new business opportunities in such fields
as petrochemicals and specialty chemicals. |

Basic Chemicals Research Laboratory |
| |
The Basic
Chemicals Research Laboratory is the oldest
among the research units of Sumitomo Chemical,
forming the core of bulk chemicals research.
Nowadays, it is also involved in research and
development in the specialty chemical area.
The Laboratory has been successful in developing
new product grades and new production processes
for industrial chemicals, synthetic polymers,
inorganic materials. It has made important contributions
to the research and development of fragrances,
perfumes, pesticides and pharmaceutical intermediates
based on its own technologies.
In newly emerging fields, the Laboratory has
successively developed new products to meet
the needs of the new chemistry era, such as
a variety of high purity alumina and environmental
catalysts. |
