Sumitomo Chemical and Monsanto Expand Weed Control Collaboration to Latin America

Sumitomo Chemical has reached a long-term agreement for weed management collaboration in Brazil and Argentina with Monsanto Co. as an expansion of its ongoing strategic partnership with the leading U.S. seed and biotechnology company.

Monsanto develops diverse weed management recommendations for farmers to have effective, economical and sustainable weed control through the Roundup Ready PLUS® Crop Management Solutions platform. The Roundup Ready PLUS® platform includes Monsanto’s Roundup brand agricultural herbicides and offers farmers choices among residual herbicides for sound weed management.

Flumioxazin-based herbicide brands and other herbicides developed and marketed by Sumitomo Chemical are effective in controlling glyphosate (active ingredient of Roundup® herbicide) resistant and tough-to-control weeds. These herbicides have produced significant results in managing resistant weeds in the United States since the herbicides of Valent U.S.A. Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical, were included in the Roundup Ready PLUS® System from 2010.

Under the agreement, Sumitomo Chemical’s herbicide Flumioxazin is included in Monsanto’s weed management system for Brazil and Argentina on a long-term basis. In addition to Sumitomo Chemical’s current distributors, Flumioxazin is marketed through Monsanto’s distribution and dealership network, under the Sumitomo Chemical brand names of Sumisoya® in Brazil and Flumyzin® in Argentina. As a result, herbicides containing Flumioxazin recommended under Monsanto’s crop management platform will be available to a broader range of farmers.

Sumitomo Chemical regards Latin America as a key area for its crop protection business, and established a subsidiary’s branch office in Argentina last year to strengthen its sales operations. With the enhanced partnership with Monsanto, Sumitomo Chemical aims to expand its business in Latin America.
