Genomic Science Laboratories
The Company established its Genomic Science Laboratories in October 2000 jointly with Sumitomo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for the purpose of promoting pharmaceutical R&D based on genome information, which is the common property of humankind. Genomic drug discovery utilizing DNA chips, two-dimensional electrophoretic migration, mass spectroscopy, etc. is expected to hold a very important position in the future drug development, safety evaluation and clinical testing. The Laboratories are working on the establishment of basic technologies in the fields of bio-informatics, genomics and proteomics and their applications for drug discovery. Utilizing these technologies, the Laboratories identify the genes associated with various diseases and then follow up with performance analyses. In addition, the Laboratories elucidate the mechanism of action of new drugs, characterize them, and forecast their efficacy and side effects by using the most up-to-date technologies in an effort to promote discoveries of new drugs based on advanced and clear conceptualization.

Genomic Science Laboratories

Bio-informatics

This is an inter-disciplinary technology drawing both on information science and life science.
Information on base sequences of genes and information on the structure of proteins are computer-processed for the purpose of genomic drug discovery.

Exploration of drug discovery
targets

The Laboratories identify genes associated with the development or progress of specific diseases and find new drug discovery targets by making full use of the latest research methodologies for genome information. Paying special attention to visceral fat storage syndrome as well as genomics and proteomics analysis, the Laboratories explore disease-related with the expectation that their inquiries will lead to the discovery of diagnostic products and therapeutic drugs.

Genomics

Based on the comprehensive expression information and function information of 10,000 or more genes, mechanisms of disease development, diagnostic methods, clarification of action of new drugs, and forecasting of safety features are pursued at the Laboratories.

Proteomics

Studying protein function in vivo comprehensively and systematically, as well as interaction between proteins or between proteins and molecules of a drug, gene functions and the mechanism of drug action are analyzed.
