Sumitomo Chemical is actively working on various programs to maintain a dialogue with communities and to familiarize people with chemistry.

Sumitomo Chemical is a participant in the roll back malaria campaign, a malaria control program led by the WHO (World Health Organization). Each year, about 300 million people contract malaria and one million die from it.
This program aims to reduce the number of people contracting malaria. The Company supplies its olyset mosquito nets, in which insecticides are embedded, to protect people from this disease.

Participation in malaria control operations

Each manufacturing facility participates in various community events as a community member, reflecting our Company's mission to nurture positive, close ties with the community.

As part of our regular outreach program, we invite people from the community to our manufacturing facility, to show them the plant facilities and major products as well as to explain how we are maintaining safety and protecting the environment.

At our Ehime Works, we invite elementary school children to plant tours during their school summer vacation.

Misawa Works, in the spirit of "solidarity and reconciliation with the community, and in harmony and coexistence with nature," works hard to maintain good relations with the community. The plant sponsors various sporting events, makes its facilities available to the community and participats activety in community events.

We carry out various volunteer activities, including the cleaning and maintenance of roads near our facilities. For example, "Sumitomo Chemical Ehime Shayukai", which consist of retirees of the Ehime Works, conducts pruning projects at Niihama Central Park every autumn, and employees fom the Misawa Works participate in an ongoing municipal project to build a town that is “rich in flowers and greenery”.

In cooperation with the Invention Association, Ichihara City and Sodegaura City, the Chiba Works provides learning opportunities to elementary and junior high school children through chemistry experiments and hands-on training to cultivate scientific creativity.

The Sumitomo Group Public Relations Committee, founded in 1956, carries out its activities under the motto “people to people is what's most important.” The committee's web site introduces the Sumitomo Group's cultural and social contributions, including donations to the Osaka Prefecture Library and the bronze statue of Kusunoki Masashige at the imperial palace plaza, and Sumitomo-related art museums. The web site also introduces special activities backed or supported by the Sumitomo Group, such as a letter writing contest and a national speech contest for students at schools for the blind.
