Sumitomo Chemical’s root goes back to 1691 when The House of Sumitomo started copper smelting at the Besshi Copper Mine in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture. By the end of the 19th century however, forests and crops were being damaged by toxic gases from the copper smelting operation. The House of Sumitomo, through determination, creativity and innovation, established a fertilizer plant in 1913 to produce calcium superphosphate fertilizers using the toxic sulfur dioxide gas, thus turning an environmentally-harmful process into an environmentally-friendly process. The establishment later metamorphosed into the modern Sumitomo Chemical Company.
Since then and for the past 100+ years, Sumitomo’s business philosophy and credo have been firmly rooted and guided by the Jiri-Rita founding principle of “Benefit Self and Benefit Others”.

For years, we had reserved and restricted our ingenious technologies mainly for internal use within our group companies and affiliates, but in response to a growing number of requests for the licensing of our state-of-the-art technologies, we decided to make them widely available to all those in need.
