Sumitomo Chemical Ranked the Best in Japanese Chemical Sector in WWF Japan's Corporate Climate Action Survey

May. 30, 2019

Sumitomo Chemical ("the Company") has been ranked the best for its climate change-related initiatives among the 37 Japanese chemical companies in the latest Corporate Climate Action Survey by the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan (WWF Japan).

WWF is a global environment conservation organization, working in more than 100 countries. WWF Japan, its Japanese branch, has been conducting a corporate climate action survey since 2014, which aims to boost Japanese companies' efforts to address climate change issues. This survey evaluates individual companies' such efforts by using the same indices across industries. Sumitomo Chemical's performance has topped the surveyed Japanese chemical companies because of, most notably, its initiatives that the Company expressed its long-term visions in accordance with the Paris Agreement, then set its climate-science-based targets and concurrently received endorsement on the targets from the Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative, a global team of people from all relevant world organizations engaged in helping companies take climate action.

Sumitomo Chemical sees global climate change as one of the highest-priority challenges facing society. To solve the problem, the Company has been working proactively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by mobilizing the versatile technological expertise it has developed as a diversified chemical company over many decades. As part of this endeavor, since fiscal 2016, the Company has been conducting a program by which products and technologies that will help reduce environmental impact are designated as "Sumika Sustainable Solutions." In addition, the Company made a quick move in 2017 to pledge its support for the Recommendations on Promoting Disclosure of Climate-related Information, set out by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Embracing the Company's business philosophy of "working to contribute to society through our business activities," all companies of the Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to be united as one in helping to solve climate change and other societal challenges.
