Sumitomo Chemical to Participate in K 2022, the World's No.1 Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber

Oct. 6, 2022

The Sumitomo Chemical Group will exhibit at K 2022, one of the world's largest plastics and rubber exhibitions, held every three years in Düsseldorf, Germany. At this year's event, Group companies will exhibit for the first time a test vehicle that uses high-performance resins currently under development for next-generation electric vehicles (EVs) and will also exhibit a number of products and technologies that contribute to a resource-recycling society, such as acrylic resins utilizing chemical recycling technology and resins for containers and packaging aimed at horizontal recycling. The Sumitomo Chemical Group looks forward to showcasing its new unique products and technologies to the attendees.

1.Overview
K 2022. The World's No.1 Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber
Dates: October 19-26, 2022
Place: Düsseldorf, Germany.

*Online admission registration and ticket purchase is required to enter the exhibition hall.

2.Exhibit Details
First Exhibit: Test vehicle for next-generation EVs
① Next-generation EV test vehicle that uses Sumitomo Chemical's high-performance plastics
We will propose specific applications that use Sumitomo Chemical's high-performance engineering plastics, including SUMIKASUPERTM LCP and SUMIKAEXCELTM PES, and new epoxy resins for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) for the next-generation EV mobility market, which is expected to develop in the future. Furthermore, at the exhibition booth, our test vehicle for next-generation EVs under development will be unveiled for the first time.

  • Test vehicle

  • EV motor

② IGETABONDTM impact resistant functional polymer
IGETABONDTM is used as a modifier and adhesive for a wide variety of engineering plastics for such products as aircrafts and cars, and will be exhibited with a focus on its impact resistance improvement in plastics and its applications.

Bringing together the latest recycling technologies and products
③ Chemical recycling of PMMA: The essential beauty of PMMA is circularized with carbon
Sumitomo Chemical will establish a plan to collect PMMA scrap. Then, using our depolymerization technology, we will make recycled MMA monomer and PMMA of the same quality as those derived from fossil fuels. We are aiming to implement a MMA/PMMA chemical recycling chain in society.

  • Products made from acrylic resin

④ Product and technology for horizontal (film-to-film) recycling of plastic packaging
The exhibit will feature high rigidity polyethylene "Sumicle®,” which contributes to the creation of mono-materialization of plastic packaging. In addition, it will also feature new technology to decolorize printed layers only in a melt-kneading process using special ink. (The new technology to decolorize printed layers is being co-developed with PILOT CORPORATION.)

Many automotive solutions, including for recycling, weight reduction, and EV applications will be exhibited.
⑤ THERMOFIL CIRCLE™
This is a glass fiber reinforced recycled plastic product that has been used in various automotive applications in Europe for about 30 years.

⑥ THERMOFIL FR™
This is a fiber reinforced plastic product with V0 flame redundancy. Its key features include its light weight and high mechanical strength. It is a light weight alternative to current engineering plastics that reduces the overall weight of items, such as batteries and other electrical products.

⑦THERMOFIL HP™
This is a glass fiber reinforced plastic product with excellent mechanical performance. There are many successful examples in which customers have achieved weight reduction by using it as a replacement for engineering plastics. An example created in collaboration with a customer to reduce the weight of the item is on display for the first time at K  2022.

⑧THERMOFIL NP™
This is a plastic product mixed with wood fibers derived mainly from thinned wood. Its key feature is its high stiffness with low specific gravity. Even when burnt, this wood fiber does not emit incremental CO2 into the atmosphere.

Venue: Sumika Polymer Compounds, Europe Ltd.
