Sumitomo Chemical Newly Designates 10 Products and Technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions

Aug. 8, 2024

Sumitomo Chemical has newly designated 10 of the Group’s products and technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. This is one of the Company’s initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable society, which marks its nineth anniversary this year. Sumika Sustainable Solutions, now including a total of 81 products and technologies, represent annual sales revenue of 588.7 billion yen, accounting for 24% of the Group’s total sales revenue.

Since 2016, Sumitomo Chemical has been working on this initiative through which it designates the Group’s products and technologies that contribute to addressing climate change and reducing environmental impact as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. The designation process includes reviews and assessments by multiple external experts. The Company has set the target of increasing the annual sales revenue from Sumika Sustainable Solutions to 700 billion yen in FY2024, the final year of its current Corporate Business Plan, and to 1.2 trillion yen by FY2030.

The newly designated products include a termite control agent using plant-derived natural pyrethrin, super engineering plastics with outstanding heat resistance, and polypropylene manufactured using material recycling technology (see the attached document for more details). Each of the products and technologies are aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and are expected to contribute to meeting those goals in their respective fields.

In 2023, Sumitomo Chemical introduced a new indicator of avoided greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions called Science Based Contributions (SBC) to more clearly demonstrate the contribution of the Company’s products and technologies to carbon neutrality. With the SBC indicator, the Company quantifies and visualizes, through scientific calculations, how much GHG emissions have been reduced in society through the use of selected Sumika Sustainable Solutions technologies and final products that are expected to definitively reduce GHG emissions. The SBC for FY2023 was 7.10 million tons of CO2e, which is a carbon dioxide equivalent unit. The Company will utilize the SBC as one of its major indicators for promoting proactive information disclosure to its stakeholders and advance its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality globally.

The Sumitomo Chemical Group strives to be an innovative solution provider that solves society’s major issues by leveraging innovative technologies. The Group will continue to work as one to create solutions that contribute to building a sustainable society.
