Sumitomo Chemical Newly Designates Eight Products and Technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions

Aug. 8, 2025

Sumitomo Chemical has newly designated eight of the Sumitomo Chemical Group’s products and technologies as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. This initiative is one of the Company’s efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable society, and marks its 10th anniversary this year. With this latest addition, the total number of Sumika Sustainable Solutions products and technologies has reached 89. These designated products and technologies generate annual sales revenue of 554.3 billion yen, accounting for 21% of the Group’s total sales revenue.

In this initiative, which was launched in 2016, Sumitomo Chemical has designated products and technologies of the Group that contribute to mitigating and adapting to climate change and reducing environmental impact as Sumika Sustainable Solutions. This designation process includes reviews and assessments by multiple external experts. The Company has set the target of generating annual sales revenue of 1.2 trillion yen from Sumika Sustainable Solutions by fiscal 2030.

The newly designated products include Rapidicil®, an herbicide suitable for the no-till cultivation of soybeans and corn; Glue Cleaner, a cleaning agent used in the manufacturing process of high-performance, energy-efficient semiconductor memories; and SUMIPEX® Meguri®, a chemically recycled acrylic resin. For further information about these products, please see the attachment. Each of these products and technologies are linked to specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and are expected to contribute to their respective fields.

In addition, since 2023, Sumitomo Chemical has introduced a new indicator, Science Based Contributions (SBC), to demonstrate more clearly how much its products and technologies contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality. SBC quantitatively and scientifically calculates and visualizes the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that have been reduced in society through the use of technologies and final products that have been carefully selected from those designated as Sumika Sustainable Solutions and are expected to reliably reduce GHG emissions. The SBC results for fiscal 2024 showed a reduction of 6.60 million tons in GHG emissions. The Company will utilize SBC as a key performance indicator as it works to enhance climate-related disclosures to stakeholders, and will continue to advance its initiatives toward global carbon neutrality.

Sumitomo Chemical will strive to be an Innovative Solution Provider that solves societal issues by leveraging innovative technologies. The Company remains committed to creating solutions that contribute to the achievement of a sustainable society.
