Towards a sustainable society

The Sumitomo Chemical Group aims to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through its business and to achieve sustainable growth. To that end, it has positioned contributing to plastic resource circulation as an important issue, and is working on innovation centered on the 3Rs, as well as working with others and raising awareness. In addition, it aims to solve problems and increase corporate value through the early social implementation of new technologies and products aimed at solving environmental problems and realizing resource circulation. The Functional Materials Division will also actively promote technological development to provide super engineering plastics that will help solve social issues.

From the perspective of improving the environmental impact and ensuring the safety of workers during manufacturing, there is an increasing demand for products that do not use halogens or red phosphorus flame retardants. However, SUMIKASUPER ™ LCP and SUMIKAEXCEL ™ PES exhibit excellent flame retardancy without the use of flame retardants.

SUMIKASUPER ™ LCP is a resin that is easy to maintain strength even when thin-walled, and has excellent moldability (fluidity), making it easy to consider weight reduction by thinning the product. It can also be used as a replacement for heavy metals, and has a proven track record. By making products lighter, it helps reduce the use of petroleum resources and contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Strengthening recycling programs/external certification

Taking advantage of the resin properties of SUMIKASUPER ™ LCP, we are developing products that incorporate recycling (regrind/repellet) features from the grade design stage. In addition, by expanding recycling data and obtaining certification from external certification agencies (UL, etc.), we are promoting waste reduction and utilization of secondary resources.

As interest in environmental issues grows, we are working to establish an evaluation platform for various evaluation methods that are attracting attention as a method for more comprehensively understanding the environmental impact of LCP product manufacturing. We are also working to improve energy efficiency in the product manufacturing process, contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
